Alcatraz Island

The infamous former federal penitentiary on a rock in the bay, now a national park reached by ferry from Pier 33. The award-winning cellhouse audio tour, narrated partly by former inmates and guards, is the highlight, along with island history and bay views. Practical note: tickets are sold only through the official operator and routinely sell out weeks ahead, so book in advance online.
