Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens

The former home of cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, displaying the largest collection of Russian imperial art outside Russia (including Fabergé eggs) and exquisite 18th-century French decorative arts, set on 25 acres of formal gardens. It is a tranquil escape away from the crowded Mall. Practical note: suggested $20 donation, closed Mondays; allow time for both the mansion and the gardens.
