National Gallery of Art

America's national art museum spans the classical West Building (Leonardo, Vermeer, Monet) and I.M. Pei's modern East Building, linked by an underground concourse, plus an outdoor Sculpture Garden. It is a world-class collection and entirely free. Practical note: open daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; the adjacent Sculpture Garden ice rink/fountain is a nice seasonal stop.
