National Mall and Memorial Parks

The iconic two-mile greensward stretching from the U.S. Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, lined with monuments, memorials, and the free Smithsonian museums. It is the single most essential outdoor space for a first-time visitor, best walked early morning or after dark when the lit memorials are stunning. Practical note: memorials are open 24 hours a day year-round and rangers staff them roughly 9:30 a.m.–10 p.m.; the Washington Monument interior requires a timed ticket.
