The Phillips Collection
America's first museum of modern art, set in an intimate former mansion in Dupont Circle, home to Renoir's 'Luncheon of the Boating Party' and works by Rothko, O'Keeffe, and Van Gogh. The smaller, salon-style galleries make for a refreshing change from the big Mall museums. Practical note: paid admission (around $20), closed Mondays, with pay-what-you-wish hours from 4 p.m. to close.
